We invite you to LISTEN to the LAND; it is a living being.

Explore the past––and present––relationship of Ho-Chunk people to Teejop, the Four Lakes region. Guided by themes, locations, and learning intentions developed by Ho-Chunk community members, the LISTEN to the LAND tour is a local introduction to Indigenous experiences, understandings, values, worldviews, and responsibilities at Teejop.

Teejop means Four Lakes. It’s the region currently known as Madison, Wisconsin, and its nearby surrounding communities. Many peoples––especially Hooçak (Ho-Chunk)––have loved and cared for this special place since beyond memory. The Teejop Community History Project hopes to encourage and support ongoing learning about past and present Indigenous relationships, perspectives, and experiences with the Four Lakes. And we seek to inspire personal explorations of our collective connections, sensitivity, and responsibility to land, water, and community. Through art and creative, place-based experiential learning, we invite you to listen carefully to this land as a living being.
